Diamonds, the hardest substance on Earth, are crystalline carbon atoms formed around 3 billion years ago under extreme conditions, with temperatures reaching up to 2000°F and pressures of 45-60 kilobars. After extremely rare volcanic eruptions, diamonds are brought to the Earth's surface.
Composed almost entirely of a single element, they are typically about 99.95% carbon. The remaining 0.05% may include trace elements, which, although not part of a diamond's essential chemistry, can influence its colour.

There are currently two methods for growing diamonds. The High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method uses large presses and extreme heat to replicate natural diamond-forming conditions, turning graphite into diamond with the help of a metal catalyst. Colored HPHT diamonds can be created through post-growth treatments.
The second method, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), involves forming diamond crystals from a carbon-containing gas without pressure. Developed in the 1980s, this process mixes gases like methane and hydrogen in a vacuum chamber. Heat triggers chemical reactions, depositing synthetic diamond onto a substrate.
